CASE STUDY 002:

Amplifying grassroot voices for climate action

CORPORATE PROFILE

The client is a donor’s collaborative founded by international philanthropists that supports, incubates and accelerates strategic elements of the climate movement, through cooperation with partners for disruptive, scalable, greenhouse gas mitigation.

SCOPE

The client in collaboration with an in-country partner sought to host a workshop for about 50 climate activists from 15 partner organizations across 15 countries. The objective was to reflect and define resilient strategies for ensuring Zero waste around the globe.
The client engaged the services of Bolingo Consult to provide interpretation services for the following language pairs:
English Kiswahili, English  Hindi and English  IsiZulu. The event was to last for five days with site visits.

KEY CHALLENGES

The client intended for the workshop to be participatory, flexible and filled with several group activities. As such, they insisted on the use of "chuchotage" or whispering, rather than an onsite simultaneous interpretation setup or RSI. They wanted to ensure the full participation of four (4) attendees from the grassroot climate action and waste management sector who spoke Kiswahili, IsiZulu and Hindi. Prior to reaching out to Bolingo Consult, the client launched a call for interpreters but could not find interpreters for the language pairs who met the requirements of the workshop.

OUR SOLUTION

Bolingo Consult was contracted to provide interpretation for the workshop less than two weeks to the start of the event. We worked with six (6) qualified and professional interpreters who supported the four (4) participants to fully participate and contribute to all the discussions and group activities of the workshop. We delivered and met the client's specifications.

"I felt honoured to be a part of this enabling process and see participants actively getting involved through my support." - Qhawekazi Phelakho, IsiZulu Interpreter
